Deaths and Services 07-22-2010 Last Updated: July 22, 2010
MARGARET PHIPPS
Margaret Joyce (Diller) Phipps was born to Sarah and Elmer Diller in Peck, Kansas on Jan. 23, 1926. Margaret had two sisters and one brother and lived in the Peck-Mulvane-Belle Plaine area most of her life. She married Billy Ray Phipps on July 15, 1943 and shared that union of 53 years with Bill until his death on Nov. 5, 1996. To this marriage were born Richard Allen, Bob, Tom, Cathy, and Vicky. Margaret loved her family, crocheting, quilting, and her vegetable garden. She so enjoyed the late wintertime when the seed catalogs would arrive, which meant the coming of spring and her ability to be outside working the land she dearly loved. She loved her customers and the open-air market where she sold the vegetables. Winter was hard on Margaret, much more so than the hot Kansas sun during the summer. Winter signaled confinement, but quilting kept her busy. Each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren snuggle in quilts made by Grandma Margaret. They feel the love sewn in every block. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, sons Richard, Allen, and Bob, and sister Mary Mae. She leaves to her legacy 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. A memorial has been established with the Senior Citizen Center of Mulvane, 632 East Mulvane Street, Mulvane, Kan., 67110.Visitation Wednesday, July 21 from 1-8 p.m. at Smith Mortuary, 1415 North Rock Road, Derby. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 612 North Linden, Belle Plaine.
