Successful season ends for nine-10-year-old baseball team By JANICE KNEISLEY Last Updated: July 22, 2010
Sportsmanship is displayed as the teams congratulates each other after the game.
The boys nine-10 year old baseball team faced two tough teams last weekend at the Cal Ripken State Tournament, Wellington. The boys were hoping to advance to the winners bracket of the tournament but fell short of their goal, advancing to the second bracket of the 15 game tourney and ending their season last Saturday morning after playing two games at state.
They had won the nod to advance to the state tournament by placing as 1st runner up in the District 3-Cal Ripken District Tournament, Haysville two weekends ago. The team won league during their regular season with a 14-0 record.
Game 1 :
Oxford faced Labette in the 2:00 p.m. Friday game. Oxford got on the board early in the bottom of the 1st inning thanks to a hit by Cal Shimkus that let Dakota Mitchell score a run. But Labette answered back by hitting a high fly ball that tied the score 1-1 in the top of inning 2. A slide by Jordan Chism, put the home team up 2-1. Oxford would score two more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning to lead 4-1. Labette made 2 runs in the 3rd inning to bring the score to 4-3 and tied the game 4-4 in the top of the 4th inning. On a strong pitching arm from the Labette pitcher, Oxford was unable to score in the 3rd and 4th innings. Two runs by the Labette team in the 5th inning and one more in the 6th inning saw the score inch up to 4-8. Oxford rallied back in the final moments of the bottom of the 6th inning to score two runs but ended the game with a 6-8 loss. Neil Terry won the MVP award and Cal Shimkus earned the WOW award.
Game 2:
Oxford faced Lakin Saturday morning for the 9:00 a.m. Game. Lakin led 0-3 by the 2nd inning despite a double play by the Oxford team; Dalton Silhan caught a high fly ball and immediately threw it to 1st base to get another Lakin player out. A run by Dakota Mitchell from a hit from Cal Shimkus and a slide into home by Jordan Chism put the score to within one point. Lakin then went on a scoring run, scoring 6 unanswered points in the the 3rd inning to bring the score to 2-9. Oxford would make no runs in the 4th or 5th innings and Lakin went on to win 2-12. Jordan Chism was named the MVP of the game and Dalton Silhan was awarded the WOW award.
Each team member also received a certificate of participation. Coaches for the team were; Kenny Thomas, Ty Mitchell and Scott Miller. The team ended the season with a swimming party Sunday evening at the Oxford Municipal Swimming Pool.
